Our November Philanthropy Sewing Session was used to
make 25 Christmas stockings for the children at the
Developmental Center for Exceptional Children.
Members of the
guild volunteer to make Philanthropy Quilts for area
charities. In 2009, the 65 members of the guild made 122
quilts. Quilts have been given to the Sunshine House, Safe
Harbor, the Anderson County Sheriff's Victims' Advocate, Richard Campbell Veterans
Home, the Anderson Police Victims' Advocate, and the Developmental Center for Exceptional
Children (DCEC.)
The Philanthropy Committee usually meets the
third Tuesday of the month at the home of
Donna Pike at 9:30 am. They welcome members to come help put kits
together or to sew.
You may use your own fabrics and patterns for a charity
quilt or you can pick up a Philanthropy Kit at any guild
meeting. The following notes provide further help:
-
A
good size quilt for our purposes is approximately
40" X 60". Linus quilts go to children from infants
to 18 years so you can sew it to the child size that
matches the fabrics you use.
-
Kits
contain a Linus label that should be sewn on the
backing of any quilt made for a child or teen.
Quilts for the Veteran's home do not use these
labels.
-
Feel
free to add fabrics from your stash if you have
coordinating fabric that you would prefer to work
with. Kits may or may not include fabric for borders
and/or backing. Sometimes you may need to donate
fabric for this.
-
Please return any unused or leftover fabric to the
committee so that it might be used in another
project. Cut scraps into 3", 4", or 5" squares, then
accumulate them until they can be used in a scrappy
quilt. Feel free to cut leftover fabric into the
largest squares possible and return it in this form
to the committee!
-
When
you have completed the quilt top, contact the
committee chair and she will cut batting for the
size you need.
